The New Prescription Hearing Aids of 2026, Compared in Plain English
Between May and October 2026, all six of the big prescription hearing aid makers announced a new top-of-the-line model, and every one of them leans on "AI." If you're shopping for yourself or a parent, the names alone are enough to make your head spin. On hearing-aid forums, the most common honest answer to "which brand is best?" is that there isn't one best brand. How well the aids are fitted and adjusted to your hearing matters as much as the logo.
This page won't pick a winner. It lays out, side by side, what each maker actually says, so you can walk into a hearing appointment knowing the names and the right questions.
The short version. All six focus on the same problem: hearing speech in noisy places like restaurants. Five of the six say they work with Auracast, the new Bluetooth broadcast audio, today; Signia says its new model is ready for it and will get it in a free app update by March 2027.[6] Battery claims range from "a full day" to "up to 51 hours." None of the announcements we read lists a price, because clinics set their own.
Why we wrote this, and a disclosure. Mark's wife, Kerry Shuffield, is a board-certified hearing instrument specialist who fits prescription hearing aids. No hearing aid maker paid for, reviewed, or asked for this page, and it has no affiliate links.
First, a few words you'll hear
- AI or DNN. A "deep neural network" is software trained on lots of recorded sound to tell speech from noise. Every maker below uses some version of it. Their claims about how much it helps come from their own studies.
- RIC or RIE. "Receiver in canal" or "receiver in ear": the common style with a small case behind the ear and a thin wire to a speaker in the ear canal. "Custom" means a shell molded to your ear.
- Auracast. New Bluetooth broadcast audio that lets compatible hearing aids tune in to sound at theaters, airports, gyms and churches. See our plain-English Auracast guide.
- Telecoil (T-coil). A small coil that picks up hearing loops, which many churches and theaters still use. If you rely on a looped room, ask whether the model you're offered has one.[11]
The six, side by side
| Hearing aid (maker) | Announced, and U.S. availability | What the maker says is new | Battery, per maker | Auracast | Telecoil for hearing loops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phonak EON (Sonova) | August 24, 2026; orderable by U.S. hearing professionals that day.[1] | A new HYPERSONIC chip running two AI systems: one separates speech from noise, one reads the room and adjusts settings automatically. WindBlock 2.0 for outdoor wind noise. 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous Phonak Sphere.[1] | Up to 38 hours on a charge.[1] | Yes, along with classic Bluetooth and Roger Direct for Phonak's wireless microphones.[1] | Not mentioned in Phonak's announcement. Ask. |
| Oticon Reveal (Demant) | August 11 to 12, 2026; orders from August 24, 2026.[2][3] | "Dual AI": one AI system works on speech and a second on the other sounds around you, following Oticon's "BrainHearing" approach of giving the brain the full sound picture. A small rechargeable miniRITE style.[2][3] | "A full day" of AI use on one charge. Oticon doesn't give an hour figure.[2][3] | Yes, through Bluetooth LE Audio. Also made for iPhone and optimized for Android.[2] | Not mentioned in Oticon's announcement. Ask. |
| ReSound Sensia (GN) | August 10, 2026; U.S. availability August 20, 2026. Sold by Beltone as the Beltone Illuminate family.[4] | A sound-scene classifier, a four-microphone directional system and AI noise reduction, aimed at lifting the voice you choose to listen to.[4] | 24 hours on the rechargeable microRIE and rechargeable custom styles. Also available with standard 312 and 13 batteries.[4] | Yes. A GN engineer told The Hearing Review all Sensia models are Auracast compatible.[5] | Two Sensia models include one, per GN's engineer.[5] |
| Signia Pure C&G MaX (WSA) | August 24, 2026; U.S. availability the same day.[6] | A new MaX chip running four AI networks at once: for speech, for noise, for the type of place you're in, and for your own voice. The first model is a rechargeable RIC in eight colors.[6] | The announcement gives charger figures, not hours per charge: the pocket charger holds up to four full charges, and 30 minutes of charging gives up to 6 hours.[6] | Hardware ready; full Auracast arrives in a firmware update through the Signia One app by March 2027.[6] | Yes.[6] |
| Starkey Omega AI+ (Starkey) | October 1, 2026.[7] The announcement doesn't give a separate U.S. date; Starkey is a U.S. company based in Minnesota. | A G4 chip running four AI networks, including a "dual compressor" meant to balance speech clarity with natural sound. Edge Mode, Starkey's noisy-place boost, can now stay on all the time. AI features extended to more custom styles, sleep tracking, and health and activity tracking in the My Starkey app.[7][8] | Up to 51 hours. Waterproof to 1 meter.[8] | Yes, with an Auracast assistant built into the My Starkey app.[7][8] | Not mentioned in Starkey's announcement. Ask. |
| Widex Allure AI RIC (WSA) | May 20, 2026; U.S. availability beginning October 2026, per Widex's October 14 update.[9][10] | A different approach: Widex keeps its natural-sound processing as the everyday setting and adds an AI "Clarity Boost" you switch on with a tap when a room gets noisy. Widex also brought back its Zen tinnitus support.[9][10] | Up to 32 hours, including 6 hours of AI use or streaming.[9] | Widex lists Bluetooth LE Audio but its announcements don't mention Auracast by name. Ask.[9] | Yes.[9] |
How to read the marketing
- "Up to" is a best case. Every battery number above comes with fine print: streaming, heavy AI use and a stronger hearing loss all shorten it.[1][2]
- "Better than competitors" claims are the maker's own studies. Makers often compare their new models favorably against competitors. We haven't found independent, head-to-head research among all six, so we don't repeat those percentages here.
- Newest isn't always necessary. Most makers sell the same new model at several technology levels, and earlier models are often still sold. If you mostly talk one-on-one at home, ask whether a lower level or an earlier model would serve you just as well.
- Price isn't listed anywhere we checked. Prices for prescription hearing aids are set by each clinic and often bundle the fitting and follow-up visits. Ask for an itemized quote, the trial or return period, the warranty and what follow-up visits are included. Our benefit guide explains how to check what your insurance covers.
Questions worth asking at your appointment
- Which of these brands do you fit most often, and which would you suggest for my hearing test results and the places I struggle?
- Does the model you're suggesting have a telecoil, and does it work with Auracast now or only after an update?
- Does it work with my phone? (Bring your phone so they can check.)
- What's the trial period, and what happens if I return them?
- How many adjustment visits are included? Most people need a few follow-up tweaks before hearing aids feel right.
Not sure you need prescription hearing aids at all? Adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss can also buy them over the counter.[12] See our OTC vs. prescription guide and our OTC comparison table.
See a doctor if you notice these
A new hearing aid won't fix a medical problem. The FDA says to see a doctor, preferably an ear-nose-throat doctor (ENT), if you have sudden or fluctuating hearing changes in the past 6 months, worse hearing or ringing in only one ear, ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, dizziness or vertigo, heavy earwax, or an ear deformity or injury.[12] Sudden hearing loss is urgent. Don't wait. See our full FDA red-flag list.
